The Most Disappointing Films of 2008

The year of 2007 was an incredible year for movies. Even then, there were some disappointments. As I look back on 2008, it was a big step down from its predecessor.

The first thing I noticed as I recalled the past year in film was that I have seen far less movies this year than in 2007. While there are a number of reasons contributing to that fact, part of it was a lack of quality releases. Last year it seemed there were new movies releasing every month that I had been anticipating for quite a while. That was not the case in 2008.

While I was looking over my seen films to compile my upcoming ‘Best of 2008′ list, I also stumbled across these three lackluster releases: the top three most disappointing films of the year.

3. Be Kind, Rewind

Be Kind Rewind

This movie showed me a few things. Michel Gondry will never release a movie as good as Eternal Sunshine and Mos Def is not a very good actor. Jack Black is typically funny, but only mildly so here. The reason Be Kind, Rewind was so disappointing is that I was not even expecting much to begin with. Even with lowered expectations it fell completely flat. Avoid for the remaining nine days of 2008 and every day after that.

2. Semi-Pro

Semi Pro

Simply put, Semi-Pro is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Two hours, two laughs. Usually Will Ferrell doing anything is funny, but apparently basketball is not one of those things. It is not even so-bad-it’s-good funny. It is just nothing. Its only purpose was to completely waste two hours of my time, the money spent on the ticket, the gas money I used to drive there, and the Mr.Goodbar hidden in my belt as I walked into the theater. Avoid for eternity.

1. Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace is easily the best film on the list, so how did it end up at number one? The listing is for the most disappointing movies of 2008, and in my mind that list is topped by the latest James Bond. This is because after Casino Royale and its reinvigoration of the franchise, I had high hopes going into Daniel Craig’s second run as Bond. While it was still a decent movie, it was nothing special. Quantum gets the unfortunate title of my most disappointing film of 2008.

As I mentioned above, there was a big drop-off from last year in terms of great movies. I suppose while it was going on I was unaware that I was living within a truly remarkable year of film. There were still some gems though, which will be given the spotlight within the next few days.

What are your thoughts on the movies of this year? Were you disappointed by any films of 2008 in particular? Do you agree with me that it was a down year (in quantity of good films) overall?

Semi-Pro was an absolute joke, as I saw it with you. Also, don’t even get me started on Quantum, you know how I feel about it, and you.
