Film Review: Gone Baby Gone
Thanks to my roommate’s Netflix subscription, I watched Gone Baby Gone last night. The movie stars Casey Affleck and was directed by his brother Ben Affleck. Did this combination make for a quality film?
The general plot of Gone Baby Gone follows Patrick (Casey Affleck) and his girlfriend, who are private detectives. When a local girl is kidnapped, they are hired by her family to work in conjunction with the police to try to recover the missing child. The story is intense and gripping, and it is definitely the driving force of the movie.
Gone Baby Gone has an elaborate story that is very engaging, and it demands your attention in various ways. Of course the plot weaves an incredibly powerful tale, but there is even more beyond that to give the viewer a great experience. The setting within shady areas of Boston (like The Departed, but this movie is actually good) has been done in the past, but it really fits perfectly here. There are plenty of side characters (mainly drug dealers and addicts) that might not seem like much, but as a whole they add a layer of believability to the movie.
On that note, being “real” is important to the film. Most movies within this genre throw in a layer of grit and violence, but here it feels natural rather than contrived. In many areas I was reminded of the independent (and excellent) film Narc. The style is harsh, but it does a good job of bringing things home.
This authentic feel would not be possible without excellent acting, and GBG delivers. Casey Affleck was excellent as a detective (and the moral constant of the film), and Morgan Freeman is spectacular playing a senior officer. The real show-stealer is Amy Ryan, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her role. Ryan plays a drug addict just about as well as I have ever seen. She is the epitome of the rough but real theme I have been mentioning.
One thing I noticed about the movie was its shift from the first half to second. The first half is dripping with suspense and action, whereas the second half is more dramatic and story-based. I loved the change, but some people might wish that the style of the first half carried through until the end. Still, this pacing was a little strange.
Possibly the greatest achievement of Gone Baby Gone is the questions it raises. If you ever need an example of a film that is morally gray, you are now covered. My head was spinning with the questions of right and wrong and defining the two. There are several points where two people could watch the movie and completely disagree on what course of action should be taken. I know that a lot of the crime and ethical discussions have been done before, but Gone Baby Gone just executes them brilliantly.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed Gone Baby Gone, and I would recommend it if you are looking for a crime thriller or a crime drama. I can say that because honestly I think it is both. The plot’s submersion in moral ambiguity and the powerful scenes of suspense and drama create a great movie experience.
8.5/10
Disclaimer #1: As I mentioned the movie has a realistic street feel to it, so if you are uncomfortable with any of the following stay away: heavy profanity, guns, drugs, assorted violence, and the absolute lows of life.
Disclaimer #2: I wrote this at 2am, and in addition I am not proofreading it. My opinions may or may not make sense, and neither may my grammar.

“The setting within shady areas of Boston (like The Departed, but this movie is actually good)”. You have got to be kidding me. The Departed…9.5/10. Narc, excellent movie.
Anyways, I enjoyed reading this review and am now interested in seeing this movie. As of this afternoon when I talked to you I was indifferent to seeing it, but after the review my interest for the film has definitely been peaked.
I like casey and am considering watching this movie, hopefully it can live up to half of what the departed did. The setting I can understand because of the heavy affleck and aflac influence. I also just viewed 21 last night…7.5/10.
this movie sounds sweet. i will definietly check it out. i love realistic movies where the bad guys are good and bad and everything is corrupt. does anything keep it from being a 9/10?
I just looked over and saw only paramore on last.fm… Not pleased. By seeing that I also unconsciously put on a tie.
I also watched this with Jbomb. I am a more difficult rater than him though I’d still give it a 7.5. My main downfall is the spilt/shift from the first to the second half. He explains it perfectly. I am very impatient and coming after the first half, the second half seemed very slow. Overall good movie, I suggest Luke should check it out. Also if you gave Departed a 9.5/10 you need to spend another 3 long boring hours of your life to watch it again.
@bean: I cannot exactly put my finger on what kept me from the 9, so I would call it a gut feeling. When I first finished the movie I said 8, but the more I thought about it I had to raise the score. Maybe with even more time it could go up even further. Either way I recommend it.
@Tiz: Props for backing me up on The Departed.
@jbomb and Tiz: I’m gonna Tiz on both of you.
i really liked it. bean will love it and definitely give it a 9/10. i like a movie that makes you think.
this movie was 20 times better than the departed. as justin pointed out, amy ryan played her role to perfection. my review will soon be posted on the one and only.
@tiz – luke should just not watch gbg cuz his love of tizzin movies like the departed will ruin the feel of this suTIZior movie.
Ben, there was to much Tiz Biz in your comment. As for the movie, i think one thing i thought could have been improved is a slight more emphasis on the main character and the girlfriends relationship. I don’t wanna say to much as to ruin the movie, but I think it would have been better had they emphasized their relationship.
@tiz – there is never too much tiz biz. in fact, there is always too little tizzin. i agree that the relationship was kind of in the background but i feel it was a useless relationship, since she was such a worthless character
I don’t know about that, the end of the movie would have been made better had they emphasized the relationship between them more so as to make the decision harder. In this case, the relationship was in the background and she turned out to be a worthless character, had they made it a bigger deal she would have had a purpose.
i think the girlfriend did nothing and was pointless
I have had this movie on my computer for a while and cause I am not really a fan of street movies I have been putting it off but maybe ill watch it soon
yo i watched this movie finally, xane let me borrow it. It is definitely one of my all time favorites. I think the girlfriend’s purpose was to show the difficulty in the decision he had to make at the end of the movie. Good look on this movie j-bomb i never would have known about it
@bean Glad you enjoyed it. I love hearing positive results from my reviews.
