Five Places I Want to Visit
There are many places across the globe that would be awesome to visit. I have narrowed that gigantic amount into a list of five destinations that I would love to experience sometime in my life.
5. Grand Canyon
Though it might be considering a “boring” choice, I picked it because well…I have never been there. The Grand Canyon is in movies fairly often, but I am sure that seeing it in person will blow me away no matter how many times I think I have seen it. I want to be amazed by its enormity and view the greatest natural wonder in the United States.
4. Venice
Venice is a more cultured choice than the Grand Canyon, though it is still spoken of as a popular tourist destination. Without having been there myself I cannot fathom the idea of the water streets, gondolas, and everything else way overused in romantic comedies. Italy has a ton of areas that I would want to visit if I ever step foot in the country, but Venice stands at the top of the list (and on this list).
3. Mayan Ruins
There is not really a specific location that Mayan ruins are contained within, so I do not have a specific location here (somewhere in Central America). I must say that a lot of my interest in checking out the ruins stems from The Fountain. After watching the film and the DVD extra features I was intrigued by the ruins. The culture is interesting, and the ruins are beautiful from both an aesthetic and archaeological standpoint.
2. Great Barrier Reef
Now I am getting into dream destinations that I have wanted to visit for a long time. Scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef is definitely one of the coolest things anyone can do on this planet. The amount of amazing underwater life is simply stunning. According to the research I did, Lady Elliot Island seems to be the prime tourist spot in the GBR, though there are several other islands that are tourist-available.
1. Alaska: Northern Lights
It was a foregone conclusion in my mind before I started typing that the Northern Lights were going to be number one. I have been obsessed with the display since the day I first learned about the phenomenon. The aurora borealis are most easily seen in Alaska, which means I will be hitting Seward’s Folly at least once in my lifetime. I cannot speak for readers, but personally I find this occurrence to be absolutely fascinating. If I ever visit one place from this list, I hope it is this one. I will get to see the most beautiful light show on the Earth…and possibly even see a polar bear.
Several of the entries illustrate what an impact film and television have. Would we know as much about places such as Venice or the Mayan Ruins were it not for popular entertainment? I think not.
What do you think of my list? What places do you want to visit?

i like this post, i think about this in my head all the time, some of my top choices are Jamacia (touristy but still sweet), Africa (perhaps the jungles of Gabon or the Ivory Coast, or get culture shocked by poor in the more desert countries, there’s alot of different parts to it South Africa would be sweet too),China (the great wall… i mean come on), and Japan. I like your idea of the mayan ruins, they’d be sweet to see, and really awesome if you actually knew some background information on it. Everything is much more appreciated when you know a little bit about it and what went into making it. it also helps to know what you’re looking for/at when you’re there. my favorite jbomb post so far.

This is great! It is fascinating to have your mind wander all over the world. I will think about my own wish list!

i agree with your five places on this list. they all seem awesome. good look on the mayan ruins and the great barrier reef. my additions would be rain-forests along the amazon, great wall, angel falls in Venezuela, Hawaiian volcanoes, mt fuji in japan and yes i agree with faith i would love to see some worn down old plantations and chill with some rastas in Jamaica (although i would probly just end up gettin robbed). also i think you overlooked the glorious splendor the Allegheny River has to offer, it is remarkable.

@faith: This post was definitely something new in terms of style for the site. Glad you enjoyed it.
@Benedicattibi: I often have my mind wander…in this case that wandering led to this post being written.
@airxxi: I am extremely jealous. The Northern Lights just seem so awesome.
@bean: What about the crystal clear Monongahela?

It’s funny that you post this. I’ve recently been thinking about this type of thing. My list actually contained 2 of yours (Grand Canyon and Alaskan Northern Lights). In addition, I add to that California to see the Red wood trees. (Waits for Miz’s comment about California)

the only two i have not seen on this list are the northern lights and the ruins. it would be cool to see those two but they are definitely not top on my list. my list includes activities in some places. i.e. heli-skiing/snowboarding in the alps. attending a premiership soccer game, hopefully at stamford bridge. i also want to see jerusalem. there are a bunch of other places i would like to visit but none that stick so far above the others. i have been fortunate enough to see a bunch of places already. makes pittsburgh seem small.
