End of 2007: The Best of Film Part 1

Yesterday I posted my five most disappointing movies of 2007. Today I brighten the mood with the first five of my top ten films of the year.

10. I Am Legend

I Am Legend

I Am Legend is a decent film starring Will Smith, and even though it was in some ways disappointing, it was still good almost solely because of Smith’s performance (as if there was anyone else in the movie to perform). He does an excellent job, and turns the film into a very personal look at his character Robert Neville’s life rather than a sci-fi thriller. There are some elements of that, but overall it is very different from what I was expecting. I also think a more faithful adaption of the book would have been more fun. Still, a good movie overall.

9. TMNT

TMNT

What can I say, I love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If it were not for this ooze-transformed amphibians I would be half the man I am today. I was very happy to see a new film from my childhood heroes, and for that reason I am probably a little biased. The movie is just fun, and if you love the Turtles like I do, you will enjoy TMNT.

8. The Lookout

The Lookout

Hindsight is always twenty-twenty. The Lookout is a movie that I probably underrated when I wrote my review back in March. The more I think about it, the more I realize what a great little film it really is. First of all, the acting is brilliant and the story is tight and finishes beautifully. The Lookout is a noir film that is really executed very well. I suppose I just was looking for more intensity when I first viewed it. Looking back I realize what a quality picture it is.

(no review up, but it received a 6/10)

7. Knocked Up

Knocked Up

If you are squeamish or offended by profanity, Knocked Up is not the movie for you. While I do not necessarily support any of the views of the film, I did think it was pretty well done. It is inappropriate but hilarious; profane but real. In its own way it is a really heartwarming film, and if you look past the foul mouths you find a real love story. I think its reality is what makes the film so hysterical and touching at the same time. Judd Apatow and his crew are masters of the comedy genre right now, with no signs of easing up. Earmuffs.

6. Live Free or Die Hard

Live Free or Die Hard

I absolutely loved the latest in the Die Hard series. Bruce Willis can still dominate the screen as an action hero, even though he has been playing John McClane for about twenty years. LFODH was the best popcorn action flick of this summer. The explosions were great, the action was superb, and the movie was hilarious as well. Were it not an absolutely stellar year for film, this one would definitely be in the top five. Yippee-ki-yay 2007.

(review)

That does it for the first five in the top ten, so if your favorite of the year is not there it must be in the top five…unless you like really horrible movies. I also missed a few this year, and that might end up being a post itself. Agree or disagree with the order? See you for the next cinco.
