Film Review: 3:10 to Yuma

3:10 to Yuma, the western starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, hit theaters several months ago. I was extremely excited for it after watching the trailer, but my roommates did not share in my anticipation. This delayed my viewing of the film, but much to my delight we caught it at the dollar theater. Did it turn out the way I had hoped?

3:10 to YumaThe truth is, it actually did not turn out the way I had hoped. It was much better. I had high expectations going into the film, but they were met and far exceeded. Everything was even more impressive than I had imagined, and this remake quickly jumped up into my favorites of the year.

Let me begin with the acting. Both Ben Wade (Crowe) and Dan Evans (Bale) gave inspired and engrossing performances as the leading men. Wade, a cold-blooded outlaw, and Evans, the father struggling with a myriad of burdens. Wade’s crew is led by Charlie Prince (Ben Foster), who steals nearly every scene he occupies with his feverish loyalty to Wade. The superb acting makes the film feel real and alive. I was inside another world for the entire movie, and barely noticed time passing.

The western ambience is perfectly done. From the bleak deserts to the saloon towns of Arizona, the presentation is both classic cowboy and gravely serious. Each shoot-out is racing with intensity, while the non-action is overflowing with suspense. It is a wonderful combination of action and drama.

Bale and Crowe

The story is interesting and often surprising. It will keep you guessing the entire time. Its twists and turns make sure you will not even glance at your watch once. I also loved its themes about fatherhood and courage. Dan Evans is a man who has been given every opportunity to give up, but he is a man of character who will not succumb to that temptation. The story is not just the journey to Contention, but Dan’s journey of honor and perseverance.

I have not seen a huge amount of westerns, but this movie instantly became one I want to see again. Western or not, it was one of my favorite films by the time the credits rolled. My roommates may still disagree, but if you have not already, be sure to check out 3:10 to Yuma. If you are anything like me you will not be disappointed.

9/10

  1. I hope to see this movie tonight

  2. Well as much as I agree with most of the points, I can’t say I was that impressed with this movie. I’m fairly certain that all of your roommates, including myself, would have given it a much less score(around a 6 maybe). Let’s just say as Justin walked out saying “I loved it” while the rest of us walked out saying “I’m happy I only paid 2 dollars instead of 10. Don’t get me wrong though, it was well worth the $2, it was quite enjoyable, just not nearly a 9/10 in my opinion.
