Film Review: TMNT
Arguably the greatest series about four mutated terrapin ninjas, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has made its glorious return in TMNT. This is the first big screen trip since the third iteration of the series when the Turtles were sent back in time to feudal Japan. TMNT actually ignores the third film as it starts after the defeat of Shredder at the end of the second film, The Secret of the Ooze. Is it a solid addition to the series?
TMNT is obviously targeted towards the younger crowd, but there are plenty of Turtle enthusiasts will buy a ticket just for nostalgia’s sake. If you grew up playing Turtle videogames, owned all the action figures, ate the cereal, or have ever dressed up as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, or Michelangelo, this is the trip down memory lane you have so long desired.
The film is faithful to its predecessors in both character development and voice acting. The Turtles & Co. behave and sound exactly as they should. Also intact is the classic Turtle humor, which is even more amusing than before. TMNT is a very light-hearted movie that will have kids and adults cracking up. In addition to the comedy, there are elements of emotional intensity and some mature storytelling; that is to say, though the movie is aimed at children, it has something for the adults as well.
The only downside is the combat. Though there are a few very impressive scenes, there was not an appropriate amount of battle sequences for a Turtle feature. We are even teased with implied action during the main brawl, rather than fleshing out the entire battle.
TMNT is a great addition to the offbeat series, and offers a fun and entertaining journey through Turtledom. It is utterly hysterical, but a few more fighting sequences really would have helped tighten the whole package. If you have ever brandished a plastic Leonardo sword, fought an imaginary Foot soldier, or yelled “Cowabunga!”, this movie is for you.
7.5/10
