Film Review: Casino Royale

After decades of James Bond movies, is it possible to reinvent the formula while still keeping the spirit of the classics alive? Casino Royale proves that not only is this task possible, but also can be done with more excitement and action than any Bond movie in recent memory. A few changes in execution coupled with a new lead (Daniel Craig) form a fresh chapter in the series, and provide audiences with an adrenaline rush not to be missed.

Casino RoyaleFrom the very start the movie is filled with energy and intense action. The movie is simply overflowing with various fight scenes and electrifying sequences, as well as a touch of Bond espionage. In comparison to the Pierce Brosnan James Bond films, Casino Royale does all of this with more thrills and considerably less cheese, allowing you to actually take the action seriously. Craig is brilliant as Bond, who is no longer a pompous member of high society, but a down and dirty secret agent.

Also important to the film is the plot that drives it. Typical to the genre, the story isn’t necessarily a thought-provokingly deep tale; of course does not mean it is poor. In fact, the story arc is wonderfully laid and emotionally charged, with exciting twists and turns along its path. This complements the well-schemed “Bond” scenes, and creates a very enjoyable trip the to theater. As a friend put, “It just makes you want to be a man.” However, the movie does balance its testosterone-induced mania with some sensitivity for the ladies in the audience; both of these elements add to the film’s appeal.

At two hours and forty-five minutes, Casino Royale is not your ordinary popcorn action flick. Incredibly, even at this length the movie never gets dull, save one small area late in the film. The icing on the cake is the clever ending that will make sure you leave with a smile on your face. The latest entry in the James Bond franchise brings it back up to par after a few embarrassing outings. Excellence.

9/10
