Album Review: Feist - The Reminder

I will go ahead and be honest: I had never heard of Feist before the iPod nano commercial either. I am in no way professing to be hip, trendy, or musically aware in any sense. All disclaimers aside, I will also admit that I found a new album that I have been playing non-stop since it entered my iTunes library.

Feist is actually just one person, the Canadian Leslie Feist. In many ways she reminds me of Regina Spektor, another female folk/alternative singer. The combination of folk and alternative may seem strange, but actually it is the one of the reasons I am enjoying Feist–it is different. In today’s musical landscape of copycats and one-hit rappers with ‘Lil’ in their name, it is refreshing to find a disc so, well, musical.

Her latest album, The Reminder, is the album from which the popular “One Two Three Four” hails. The disc flows beautifully, weaving from quick and powerful to relaxed and laid back without missing a beat. It creates a sense of fullness and cohesion as you listen to everything straight through. The best word I can use to describe it is “smooth.” Ms.Feist’s impressive vocals make sure every track carries both force and grace.

The Reminder is a great album that is definitely worth a purchase if you are looking to try something unique and different, or your ears want a break from the revoltingly overplayed “Hey There Delilah.”

  1. I had also not heard of Miss Feist until the iPod commercial. I may now have to get some of her music.

  2. I took a preview listen at the iTunes music store. I didn’t like it.
